Very Bad Days...

'Success is never permanent, and failure is never final.' Mike Ditka

Yesterday I took our 7-year-old son to see the movie, "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day!'  It was a cute movie that prompted a lot of laughs, and although it was quite an exaggeration of what an average 'bad day' looks like for most of us, there is definitely something to the notion that some days are just not built for success.

When one of these very bad days makes itself known in my life, I have coined a term to describe it. I like to say that the 'Schitt Fairy' has paid me a visit. When this happens the little winged she-beast sprinkles her negative fairy dust all over the place... and despite all of my best efforts to transform the negatives into positives, I often seem completely unable to turn things around. Blaming it on the Schitt Fairy always makes it kind of fun, and it gives me a chance to do an elaborate tongue in cheek ceremony that I call a Schitt Fairy exorcism. (These exorcisms are always different; sometimes  a good old verbal banishing while I wave my arms and stomp my feet works, while other times require a night out with my husband and a martini.

Although based in make-believe, the notion that my bad day is due to this nasty little sprite sitting on my doorstep works for me- and it gives me something (or someone) to work against. I always manage to do battle with her and win... and whether anyone else believes in the Schitt Fairy or not, when I send her packing, my day immediately gets better, and that makes her real enough for me.
